CARC 107: Related or Qualifying Claim/Service Not Identified
What it means
The payer is saying that this claim depends on another claim or service being linked to it, but that related claim or service wasn't referenced or wasn't found in their system. Without that link, they can't process this claim as billed.
Common causes
- Missing or incorrect reference to a prior claim number (e.g., original claim ID for a related service)
- The related or 'parent' claim was never submitted, was rejected, or is still pending
- Incorrect or missing procedure/service code that should tie back to a primary claim (e.g., anesthesia billed without a linked surgical claim)
- Claim submitted out of sequence, before the qualifying service was processed
- Data entry error in the field that identifies the related claim (e.g., wrong claim number, transposed digits)
How to fix it
- Identify which claim or service this denial says is 'related' or 'qualifying' — check the remark codes (RARCs) that often accompany this CARC for more detail
- Confirm the related/original claim was actually submitted and check its status with the payer
- Correct and resubmit the claim with the accurate reference number (original claim number, ICN, or DCN) in the appropriate field
- If billing a service that depends on another (e.g., assistant surgeon, anesthesia, staged procedure), verify the primary procedure claim has been processed first
- Contact the payer to confirm exactly which claim/service they expect to see linked before resubmitting
Appeal / resubmit
Before appealing, verify whether the related claim was processed and paid — if so, include its claim number, date of service, and payer claim ID in your appeal or corrected claim. Attach documentation showing the connection between the two services (e.g., operative report linking primary and assistant surgeon claims). If the related claim was denied or never received, resolve that claim first, since this denial usually can't be overturned until the linked claim is in the system.

Frequently asked
Does this mean my claim was completely rejected?
Not necessarily rejected outright — it means the payer couldn't match this claim to a related service they expected to see, so it can't be finalized until that link is established.
What information do I need to fix this?
Typically you need the original or related claim number, the date of service for the linked claim, and confirmation that the related claim was processed by the payer.
Can I just resubmit the same claim again?
Resubmitting without adding the correct reference to the related claim will likely result in the same denial. You need to add or correct the linking information first.
